Amended for 2025 collaboration with Victoria Festival of Queer Arts
The Spring Residency for 2025 will be awarded to a second year, ‘Queer identifying, Visual Arts student (or recent graduate within the past 5 years or less) who is strongly self-motivated, shows creativity, and who fosters community spirit. The Visual Arts department provides studio space and a faculty advisor through an Independent Study course.

You must:
- be a second-year Visual Arts student or graduate of the program within the last five years.
- submit a copy of your Camosun unofficial transcript along with; a Letter of Intent, a Portfolio supporting the letter, and a separate application as an Independent Study (some media restrictions apply).

Please submit a Letter of Intent and a Portfolio supporting your ability to fulfil your intent along with a separate application for Independent Study (some media restrictions apply). The Independent Study Application must be in the form of a Project Proposal. The Spring Residency will take place during May and June and will conclude with an exhibition of work made during the residency to be installed in the last week of June (or sooner) to coincide with the Victoria Festival of Queer Arts programming.
For folks curious about the term 'Queer' and how we're adopting it in terms of the festival, we defer to the powerful bell hooks (1952-2021), who offered:
“Queer' not as being about who you're having sex with (that can be a dimension of it); but 'queer' as being about the self that is at odds with everything around it and that has to invent and create and find a place to speak and to thrive and to live.”
